New to Me – January 2020 (Part 2)

Whew! I’m finally awake again after finishing last week’s Part 1 of my “New to Me Games – January” post.

That really took a lot out of me. It’s been a week and I’m just now recovering!

Excuse me while I hop on my Peloton and limber up for today’s posting.

Peloton high rise
Yes, I live that high up! (And if you want to see a hilarious parody Twitter thread of the Peloton ads, check them out here (where I got this picture from, though no idea where he got it)

My fellow Cult of the New to Me members are very happy after seeing today’s post. There’s a game from 2009 in there! And 2016! Of course, there are a few too many 2019 games on there so there was a little grumbling.

I may have to do something for them for Valentine’s Day.

So, without further adieu (all of my adieu was sold for a tomato at a Chinese market anyway), let’s begin!

New to Me – January 2020 (Part 1)

It’s a brand new year! And this time, I can actually say that while talking about 2020 games (unlike last month).

January was a busy month for new-to-me games. I went to two conventions on back-to-back weekends (that was a lot of fun but also very tiring). At least they weren’t long drives!

Exhausted

I did kind of feel a bit out of it after the second one, though.

The Cult of the New to Me was really happy with me, though. There weren’t even any attempted coups!

Maybe a few too many 2019 games for their tastes, but there are a number of 2017 and 2018 games in there (and even a 2009 game in the next part!)

Next part?

Yes, I said next part.

I played a grand total of 28 games in January (34 plays). Fifteen of them were new to me games. There is no way all of them are going to fit in one post.

Thus, this is only Part 1.

Part 2 will be coming.

This also means that the descriptions of the games will probably be a bit briefer than usual. Maybe I should actually do that for all of these posts.

We’ll see.

So without further adieu (all of my adieu was traded for some water on an alien planet anyway), let’s get started!

Top 10 Games Played in 2019 (5-1)

Whew! After telling you the first half of my Top 10 games played in 2019, I needed a break. Being surrounded by all that awesomeness can be tiring!

Hammock
Yes, I am short…why do you ask?

But now I’m back with the bottom half of the list. These are the 5 best games I played in 2019, and you know they’re going to be good because I have the best taste (seriously, you do know that, right?).

Please note that this is not the Top 10 games of 2019. I only wish I had played enough actual 2019 games to qualify to have a Top 10.

That would be a great year!!!! But my fellow cultists would be really miffed.

No, these are the Top 10 games that I played in 2019.

You can find the first half of this list here.

So let’s get this show on the road!

Top 10 Games Played in 2019 (10-6)

It’s that time of year again!

Time to look back at 2019 and see what games I played this year and which ones I definitely want to play again. Also, which ones can be left by the side of the road looking all forlorn because they just aren’t that good.

I had a pretty good year in 2019. I played 107 games 192 times (not each!). Of those 107 games, 63 were new to me, which was a lot of fun. I always love learning new games (and I like to keep my cult members happy).

Surprisingly, I played the exact same number of games (107) in 2018 but 67 of them were new (and I had 201 plays).

Smash Up was my number one game played with 16 plays, followed by 11 plays of Space Base (both of them are work lunchtime game staples, so it’s not surprising).

My most amazing feat, however, was getting Eldritch Horror to the table a whopping 5 times! That includes 4 times in the last two months of the year.

Of course, there are side effects to that.

On Fire

But we endure!

So let’s see what the top 10 games that I played this year are. There may be a few surprises based on last year’s rankings.

I’m nothing if not Walt Whitman.

Please note that this is not the Top 10 games of 2019. I actually did a count, and I only played 20 games published in 2019. Thus, half of them would be on that list if I did that.

No, these are the Top 10 games that I played in 2019.

This post will be broken into two parts, so here are numbers 6-10! (The Top 5 will post on Wednesday)

New to Me – December 2019

Happy New Year!

As we start the new year here at the Cult of the New to Me, we want to look back at the previous month, because looking back is what we do!

That’s right. We never talk about the new to me games that we’re going to play. We always look at what we just did.

Some would say that we’re stuck in the past, but I say those who don’t study the past are doomed to repeat it!

Yes, I just made that up. Insightful, isn’t it? (Editor – Hey, Dave. George Santayana on Line 1)

I think I’m pretty much as insightful as Abraham Lincoln.

Anyway, we do like to look back here at Cult Headquarters, and right now we’re looking back at December!

So without further adieu (all of my adieu got traded at some Baghdad market stall for a gold guild ring anyway), let’s get this show on the road!

New to Me – November 2019

It’s December! The last month of the year, the Christmas (or whatever end-of-year holiday you celebrate) season is upon us, but before we look forward to all of those presents sitting under the tree (or sitting under whatever your end-of-year holiday object is), it’s time to reflect back to a time long ago.

Two days is long, right?

Yes, that’s right. It’s the new to me games played in November! Even with Christmas coming soon, the leader of the Cult of the New to Me has responsibilities to the time before.

There is always an undercurrent of unrest in the cult, especially when I play a lot of brand new games in a month. They think I’m a sellout to the Cult of the New or something like that.

I don’t know where they would get that idea.

Bribe

But it’s not true!

Hell, I even played a game from 1997 in November.

It was a nice bunch of games, seven in total which is amazing since I actually skipped a week. They were all fun in their own way, but some definitely better than others.

Amazingly enough, for somebody who’s not a big fan of word games, two of the new games are word games! One incredibly fun and one…not so much.

I’m looking forward to a December that’s also chock full of new to me games.

So without further adieu (all of my adieu was eaten by a giant worm anyway), let’s get this thing started!

Birthday Post – 4 Games I’m Looking Forward To

It’s my birthday!

Yes, I’m turning the big 49 today, and in celebration, I’m going to tell you the 49 games I’m really anticipating over the next few months.

Ok, no. I’m not that much of a masochist.

Instead, the number 4 is part of 49, so here are four games that I really can’t wait to get to the table this Fall.

1) Abomination: The Heir of Frankenstein (Plaid Hat Games)
