It had been a quiet September at Dude Central. There was a birthday party that nobody came to (it’s not my fault I accidentally put September 9, 2018 on the invitations. How was I supposed to know that everybody would actually look at the year and think the party had already happened?)
It’s been almost three years in the making, but I almost hit 300 games played since I started recording plays and I thought it would be a great idea to give you what my top 25 games played are.
Thanks to Pub Meeple for the marvelous (if extremely time-consuming) ranking engine! It took 2050 comparisons and about 2 hours of swiping right or left (it’s like Tinder for your boardgame collection if Tinder had a “which person would you rather meet?” comparison function) but I broke them all down.
Just a note before you get outraged. There are tons and tons of games out there. I’ve played 295 of them (as of the ranking). There are some “classics” that are not on there because I’ve never played them. No Blood Rage or RisingSun, or even Gloomhaven.
Also keep in mind that many of these I’ve only played once. Thus, subsequent plays may affect how I feel about them. These are not reviews or based on some kind of objective value.
These are just the games that appeal to me the most.
Hopefully you’ll find this list interesting. Let me know what you think or what your rankings are like in the comments!
October is usually a quiet month, but a gaming marathon at the beginning dumped five “new to me” games all in one day and it was only upwards from there!
That was the exciting part of the month. I was going to share it far and wide to the rest of the Cult of the New to Me, but unfortunately they all took great advantage of Canada’s new cannabis legalization laws and, well, this happened…
That seems to happen a lot when I’m talking, actually.
It’s obvious that fatigue is an on-going problem in our society.
Anyway, with nine “new to me” games on the list, my pal David over at Roll to Review should be happy.
So without further adieu (all of my adieu was taken by some dwarf and used to forge some stupid hammer named Mjölnir anyway), let’s get started!
After the rather dead January for New to Me games, February really picked up. So much so that my last game session I had to try and play some previously-played games just so that I didn’t overload myself (this writing stuff is hard!). That resulted in a fun game of Terraforming Mars, so it was a win-win that day.
But you’re not here to hear me wax poetic about that brilliant game, are you?
(You aren’t, are you? If so, please tell me so I can start writing about it).
No, you’re here to see what new games that I played in February so you can all drown in your dark pool of jealousy.
So before I start writing in Middle English, let’s get started!
August was the month of the Dragonflight convention (38th edition, see you there on the 39th maybe?) so it’s to be expected that I would get some new games in.
But surprisingly, not as many as I expected. I did get a couple of new ones in there, but we played a lot of the old mainstays, which is also never a bad thing. Still, three of my six new games were played there, and I also played for a second time one of my August new ones.
I always like a good mix, and August was definitely one of those (though there would be one more new game in there if it hadn’t been aborted on Turn 3 for reasons).
So why don’t I stop blathering and let us get to the good stuff?
It was a pretty lean month in June for new games. There were a few that I played for a second time, but that doesn’t count (or so the mean-looking guy behind me holding the truncheon says).
Only three new games in June, which is a pretty poor record. I will have to do better in July (he says, having played two non-new games on the first weekend of the month)
Still, the three that I did play were very good, with only one that I’m lukewarm on, and that could be because Martin Wallace is a sadist (I kid, though I wouldn’t be surprised if when he makes his kids clean their rooms, there is a way they could do it where they’re stuck doing it for months and can’t come out until they’re done).
