New Visitors Expansion for Viticulture in 2018

Sorry I’ve been away so long. Was expecting to do some blogging on my three weeks vacation and…didn’t.

But what great news to come back to!

Viticulture is a game about running a vineyard for victory points (yes, those nasty victory points again).

I’m actually a big fan of the game. Not because I harbor fantasies about running a vineyard or that I’m a wine snob or anything.

No, I love it because it’s one of the rare engine-building Euro games that I am actually fairly decent at. I can actually win the game!

So imagine my delight when I saw the announcement on Boardgame Geek that a new expansion is coming out for it.

Unfortunately, the designer of the game, Jamey Stegmaier, posted in the thread that it’s been delayed until 2018, but just the fact that another one is coming is great news.

One of the keys to victory in Viticulture is efficient use of the Visitor cards that you can use in their respective seasons (there are Summer visitors and Winter visitors). Many of these cards give you victory points for doing various things.

Some people call it too swingy and luck-based because of that, but really it’s about using them to their best ability. You can get royally screwed sometimes if you just don’t draw any good cards, but it’s rare that you can’t use at least some of them.

Anyway, Jamey said on the Cardboard Herald podcast that the new expansion will be more cards that go toward engine-building and less toward straight victory point generating.

I think that can only make a great game better. Who can say no to having more options?

I have a friend who has everything Viticulture and who I am sure will be jumping on this expansion when it comes out, so I probably won’t be buying it myself.

But I can’t wait to play it.
